The Erdener Treppchen (Erdener Stairs) is a world-class site. It is one of the Grand Crus of the Mosel and is one of the most renowned top sites at the Central Mosel. The site extends opposite the wine village of Erden on a slope with southwest orientation and up to 70% slope. The site is named for the stairs which has been carved into the mountain centuries ago.
The Erdener Treppchen is famous for the, red, iron-containing soil which is mixed with the blue and gray slate dominating the Mosel as well as the fine soil made of clay loam. This red soil material was carried by shifting the soil from the Wittlich valley to the Mosel. The combination of a special soil and optimal climatic factors creates wines with a high recognition value. The wines from the Erdener Treppchen are characterized by a high density of different aromas paired with a complex minerality. We always produce wines from this area with residual sweetness.
